What factors should be considered when choosing an O-ring?
O-rings are widely used in various dynamic and static sealing occasions due to their low manufacturing cost and convenient use.
Sealing mechanism of O-rings:
O-rings are an automatic bidirectional sealing element. During installation, the radial and axial pre-compression gives the O-ring its own initial sealing ability. It increases with the increase of system pressure.
Factors to consider when selecting O-rings:
1. Sealing form
According to the load type, it can be divided into static seals and dynamic seals; according to the sealing purpose, it can be divided into hole seals, shaft seals and rotating shaft seals; according to its installation form, it can be divided into radial installation and axial installation. When radially installed, for shaft seals, the deviation between the inner diameter of the O-ring and the sealed diameter d2 should be as small as possible; for hole seals, the inner diameter should be equal to or slightly smaller than the groove diameter d1.
2. Working medium and working conditions
When selecting the material of the O-ring, the compatibility with the working medium should be considered first. It is also necessary to comprehensively consider the working conditions such as pressure, temperature, continuous working time, and operating cycle at the sealing point.
